Welcome to Cancer Season
Welcome to Cancer Season
As we step into the Summer Solstice, we enter into the sentimental, nurturing sign of Cancer. The Sun leaves Gemini’s fast-moving mental realm of language, logic, and information, and embraces Cancer’s subjective world of intuition, feelings, and memories. During this time, we shift from Mutable Air to Cardinal Water, and the difference will be noticeable.
Water, Yin, Cardinal
As a Water sign with a “yin” nature, Cancer is driven by emotions that flow into the self. This suggests a natural receptivity & attunement that brings the outer world into the inner landscape of memories, instincts and emotional intelligence.
As a cardinal sign, the Cancerian energy responds to inner needs by taking action and initiative in the outer world. This creates an “inner-out” attunement, which can sometimes show up as action- followed by rest, or responsiveness followed by withdrawal. There is a real push-pull rhythm to Cancer’s way of being in the world. For as long as I can remember, I have associated the sign of Cancer with ocean waves- the way they come and go, in a very natural rhythm, with high tides and low tides, deeply influenced by The Moon.
Ruled by The Moon
“The Moon is the primordial symbol of rhythm, for as it waxes and wanes, it exerts real physical influence on the earth and on all who live on the earth, controlling the rhythms of the tides and the blood cycles of women. It is the ultimate symbol of rhythm and the oldest way of marking time.”
Ruled by The Moon, Cancer is a profoundly emotional sign that bonds deeply with those they care about. The past plays a powerful role in Cancer's subjective reality. This creates a sensitivity around memories shared with others. Cancer is renowned for its sentimental nature, perhaps cherishing a collection of “special” objects tied to specific people, places, and experiences. They often view current situations through the lens of past experiences, especially those that evoke strong emotions. This can lead to a tendency to dwell on nostalgia or past hurts, or cling to those they depend upon, which then shapes their present perceptions.
Sometimes described as “moody”, I prefer to hold Cancer in my heart as being more “moony”. Due to its lunar nature, this astrological energy flows through a cycle of emotions, one in which feelings grow into full expression, perhaps generating a few days of higher visibility or extroverted activity, followed by a need for retreat, rest, and renewal. Cycles, rhythms and inner-outer patterns are deeply embedded in the nature of this sign.
As Layne Redmond teaches us in her classic text, When The Drummers Were Women, in ancient times, women, mothers, and grandmothers were priestesses and community leaders. They were revered for their leadership and caregiving. They often led ceremonies that invoked the cycle of the moon and the power of the feminine through songs and rhythms played on frame drums that symbolized their connection to The Moon, The Mother, and The Womb. All three of these archetypes are held within the sign of Cancer.
The womb of the mother is the first HOME for every human.
Cancer is the sign that holds the healing waters of the womb and the breast, a place of such deep sustenance and powerful bonding experiences that the emotional content within those memories oftentimes lies just beyond our conscious awareness.
Cancer is the place where we hold memories of sentimental nostalgia, as well as painful wounding; lunar patterning that draws and magnetizes us into resonant relational dynamics. The gift of attunement and responsiveness lies at the heart of the Cancer energy.
First, there is the uncanny ability to intuit emotions and needs flowing within their environment followed by an instinctive ability to respond appropriately. With this inner-outer listening and responding at the core of the Cancer Sun, creating a safe space to care for self and others is central to their life journey. For a Cancer, the world isn't just a collection of facts and objective observations; it's a vibrant tapestry woven with feelings, memories, and personal connections.
On June 9 2025, Jupiter entered Cancer and will remain there until June 30 2026. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, growth, abundance, wisdom, faith and good fortune. It is considered to be a bestower of blessings, and signifies where we seek greater meaning and Truth.
Cancer is the sign of Jupiter’s exaltation. I’ve often wondered why? why did the ancient wisdom keepers choose the sign of Cancer to be the placement for Jupiter’s exaltation? I’ve sat with this question for years, listening within, and what I’ve found within my own heart is this- Jupiter in Cancer magnifies a profound truth, a truth that “inner”stands- that these experiences of bonding, these moments of caring for one another, are the very thing that give life meaning. As my husband, who is one of my greatest spiritual teachers in this lifetime, often reminds me, Love is the reason we exist.
To this day, raising healthy families is at the center of a healthy community. Caring for each other by creating a sense of safety, security, and togetherness inside of the home extends out into the world. Pregnancy, birth, and raising children is the place many of us, male and female both, want to experience our greatest blessings. After all, how often does one’s prayer first center around closest family members and then extend out into relationships within the greater community?
Jupiter’s year-long transit through Cancer brings a genuine, beautiful opportunity to create a loving, supportive environment filled with nurturing relationships and physical security. The potential challenges may be found in an overly-emotional tendency to cling, or to be over protective, of those we love. The important thing to remember is to allow the movement of energy so that it flows toward and then away, like the ocean waves or the breath. This way there is no gripping or clinging that creates stagnation or over-dependency. Water is healthiest when it is clear and it flows.
I would be remiss if I did not mention that not everyone has a family life, and yet each of us experiences Cancer energy in the birth chart somewhere. Even if you have Cancer in the 5th house of creativity, or the 9th house of spiritual study, or the 10th house of career, let there be a growing awareness in the reciprocal flow between your inner knowing and outward action. Be curious about your own natural cycles around togetherness and solitude. This is a time to hone in on your instincts and really embody the inner-outer rhythms of this sign.
Sun-Jupiter Cazimi
Every year The Sun and Jupiter come together in a conjunction, also known as a Cazimi. Cazimis are considered to be auspicious moments when a planet comes into deep harmonic relationship with The Sun. This year, the Sun-Jupiter Cazimi occurs on June 24 at 3-Cancer. This is a blessed day, a good day for setting intentions of how you might like to work with the Jupiter in Cancer energy over the next 12 months.
New Moon in Cancer
Another good day for working with intentions is the New Moon in Cancer on June 25. As some of you who have been my clients for some time know, I’ve been talking about this particular New Moon for a solid nine months. I’ve advised many of you to work with this energy as a time of planting seeds of hope, a vision that truly speaks to your heart, that you would like to bring to fruition over this Lunar Cycle as well as throughout the year.
I’ll close with a Jupiter in Cancer call for hope in action. Let’s take this time together to build a collective vision of caretaking that creates pockets of love and coherence that extend out into the world around us, and then pull back for rest and retreat as needed. May this instinctual wisdom to nurture serve as a remedy to the many challenges we see developing on the world stage. Most people that I speak with are deeply concerned, and at the same time, many of us are still trying to wade through the gifts and the challenges of our personal lives. Moments of Love and Joy are meant to be celebrated and honored. Offering care and support where needed is also meant to be celebrated and honored. Cancer season always reminds us that time shared is precious. Enjoy your time with those you love and take good care of yourself.
Many Blessings,
Ally
