The Venus Cycle: From Seed to Full Bloom
Venus is the brightest celestial body in the sky, second only to the Sun and the Moon. Cultures around the world have known her by many names and revered her as a divine being for centuries. Her journey of rebirth from Evening Star to Morning Star is one of the most recognizable cycles in the sky, one that has been observed, studied, and honored since ancient times.
When Venus appears so brightly in the evening sky, just after sunset, astrologers, stargazers and ordinary people alike oftentimes see her arrival as a sacred message. Her appearance demands attention and consideration: something significant is happening. A goddess is in our midst, and she has something to convey.
As I sit here with a sincere desire to honor the nuances of her path, I can feel the sense of wonder and awe that she stirs in my heart, and in the hearts of so many who have looked up night after night, in silent reverie, tracking her majestic descent, watching her disappear, and then awaiting her arrival again with the morning Sun.
Her beauty is timeless, and her story is the tale of every heart. After all, each one of us knows in some measure what it is to fall in love, to be at the mercy of a lover’s touch, to feel the sting of love lost, and to rise from the ashes of a broken heart. This is Venus’ story.
Venus is the Planet of Love, Beauty & Desire
Venus is the planet of love, beauty, attraction, and desire, oftentimes associated with relationships, money, and feelings of self-worth. She teaches you about how you connect with others, what you value, where you find pleasure, what you truly desire, and how you allow yourself to give and receive in relationships.
As a planet of attraction and pleasure, Venus moves you to seek out experiences, people, and objects that you appreciate and enjoy. She colors your personal style and appearance. After all, most of us buy clothes and jewelry that we like in order to feel attractive. That’s Venus.
And this gives us insight into why Venus is often considered a financial planet: we spend money on the things we most value and desire.
Venus moves you to taste the sweetness of desserts, to snuggle up with a soft blanket in a candle lit room, to read your favorite novel while sitting at a local coffee shop. She teaches us so much about ambiance and a good vibe.
And hopefully, Venus moves you to connect with others who enjoy the same things, because pleasure is doubled when shared.
If you really take the time to look, Venus is all around you. Venus is in the food you eat, the clothes you wear, and the way you’ve decorated your home. The connection is very real and constant; sometimes, we simply need to notice.
The Rose of Venus
Just as each planet in the sky holds a specific quality of archetypal energy, each planet also moves at a particular pace and in a particular pattern as it orbits around the Sun. Oftentimes, this creates beautiful sacred geometry in the sky.
Over approximately eight years, Venus returns to similar places in our sky, tracing a five-pointed pattern through her relationship with the Earth and the Sun. This pattern is known as the Rose of Venus.
Venus is the celestial expression of the rose, and the rose is the terrestrial expression of Venus. The rose has long been a symbol of beauty, love, devotion, and the heart. Delicate yet powerful, she has been cherished in beauty rituals throughout history. Her soft, spiraling petals invite us closer to explore her sweet aroma, while her thorns remind us that love sometimes calls for protection and discernment. Roses look, smell, and feel like love.
The rose also gives us an image for the whole Venus cycle: a seed planted in darkness, a period of growth that we cannot always see, and eventually, a bloom. To understand that unfolding, we need to follow Venus beyond her retrograde period and through her entire cycle. Viewed within this larger journey, the retrograde becomes part of a process of descent, release, and renewal—a rhythm reflected again and again in the beauty of nature.
What Does Retrograde Mean?
Technically speaking, retrograde motion is a period of time in which a planet appears to be moving backward from the viewpoint of Earth. Venus slows in her apparent movement through the sky and eventually seems to stop and turn around. Venus is retrograde for about 40 days, a number that is spiritually significant, while the passage through both shadow periods takes considerably longer. Venus goes retrograde about every 18 months and returns to a similar place in the zodiacal wheel for retrogradation every eight years, again creating the beautiful image of the Rose of Venus.
Archetypally speaking, retrogrades are often a period of internalization in which you can consciously choose to review and reassess where you are in life, where you’ve been, and where you would like to go in the future. With Venus retrograde, relationship patterns connected to self-worth or unresolved issues from the past may come to light. This review offers an opportunity to release what no longer serves your highest good. In doing so, you may grow into a fuller expression of love and beauty, more aligned with your values and desires.
As mentioned, Venus’ retrograde is only one portion of a longer journey. Here, I’ll explore eight stages and turning points within that journey, following her from the first invitation to reflect through the eventual flowering of a new intention. Dates below are given in Eastern time.
Entering the shadow: August 31, 2026, at 22° Libra
Stationing retrograde: October 3, 2026, at 8° Scorpio
The Evening Star’s descent
The Seed: The Inferior Conjunction on October 23-24, 2026, at 0° Scorpio
The Morning Star’s emergence
Stationing direct: November 13, 2026, at 22° Libra
Leaving the shadow: December 15, 2026, at 8° Scorpio
The Bloom: The Superior Conjunction on August 11, 2027, at 19° Leo
Entering the Shadow
The shadow phase begins when Venus first reaches the degree of the zodiac to which she will eventually return before turning direct. The life experiences and themes that are coming up for review during the retrograde cycle may first present themselves around this time. During this particular retrograde cycle, the shadow phase begins on or around August 31 at 22° Libra. If you have planets or important chart points near this degree, these themes may feel especially personal.
Pay attention to messages, signs, and significant moments as Venus enters her shadow. They may offer a glimpse of the material you will be working with throughout the retrograde portion of the journey. There may be the first hint of turning inward to ask yourself questions around what you really want and with whom you want to share it.
The Station Retrograde
The retrograde station is the moment Venus appears to slow to a stop and change direction from our perspective on Earth. Because she spends more time near the degree where she stations retrograde, themes connected with that part of the zodiac may feel intensified. The energy can also feel stalled, as if things are moving very slowly or have stopped altogether. In this particular cycle, this happens on or around October 3, 2026 at 8° Scorpio. If you have planets or important chart points near 8°, you may feel this sacred pause more personally, depending on how Venus appears in your chart.
Whether by choice or by circumstance, you may be invited to slow down, turn inward and review where you are in life, reassess how you got there, and reorganize where you would like to go in the future. Revising, reevaluating, and redoing are all appropriate for a retrograde cycle. In the case of Venus, we might reassess our values, our tastes, our aesthetics, and our approach to relationships.
Looking to Venus for guidance, you might consider this as a time to pause and shift perspective rather than push forward. In order to make progress in the future, perhaps you first have to stop and review where you have been. After all, there may be hidden value you would miss if you did not take the opportunity to go back and find it. Circumstances may also reveal the material you will be working through. It may be very clear which relationships and values are demanding your attention at this time. Pay attention to events on or around October 3. Where are you being asked to pause and take an honest look at something you may have been avoiding?
Evening Star Phase: Release
As an Evening Star, Venus shines in the western sky after sunset, bright and beautiful. During this phase, she is known as Venus Hesperus, meaning “Western” or “evening”. Like the waning half of the lunar cycle, this portion of her journey symbolically invites us to reflect on experience and distill its meaning. Feelings may be expressed more quietly or carefully, yet remain deeply intense. Those born during this phase may take time to integrate love, loss, and relationship lessons.
Within the Evening Star phase, the retrograde brings a particular period of descent. As Venus approaches her meeting with the Sun, she draws closer to the sunset and eventually disappears from view.
This part of the retrograde cycle is often a time of winding down and looking back, tying up loose ends and bringing things toward closure. Dane Rudhyar describes this as a time of recapitulation: a summarizing and revisiting of what has come before. You may revisit a familiar theme, perhaps something left unfinished or undervalued, which resurfaces as an essential piece of your development. Unresolved relationship patterns may invite you to reconsider how you recognize and honor your own worth.
There can be a sorting and processing quality to this period, preparing you for the new seed planted at the Inferior Conjunction. As you release what no longer serves you, you begin to make room for a new vision, desire, or purpose to take root.
The Seed: The Inferior Conjunction
As Venus moves deeper into her retrograde motion, she drops lower in the evening sky each night until finally disappearing from view. This is one of the most significant turning points of the entire Venus cycle, because this is when Venus enters the Heart of the Sun. Some even say it is the moment that Venus kisses the Sun, which seems appropriate for a planet known for love and romance.
Known in astrology as the Inferior Conjunction, this moment of deep union between the Sun and Venus is the equivalent of a New Venus. It marks the beginning of a brand-new Venus cycle, much the same way a New Moon is the beginning of a new lunar cycle.
At the Inferior Conjunction, Venus is always retrograde.
This is the Seed.
There is an opportunity to reorient your Venus experience entirely as a new seed is planted during this time.
However, this seed is planted in the darkest, most internal parts of your consciousness, and the potential within it may feel unknown or hidden in some way.
There might be a “small voice within,” a soul whisper, that makes the tiniest suggestion, planting the tiniest seed in the invisible wisdom of your soul.
As life moves forward, that seed can become clearer as it grows in size, priority, definition, and expression.

Morning Star Phase: Renewal
After her hidden embrace with the Sun, Venus returns to the sky as a Morning Star, appearing in the east before sunrise. Now known as Venus Lucifer, from the Latin meaning “Light Bringer,” she offers an image of rebirth and the first light of a new beginning.
Something within has changed. Having reflected on your personal values, relationship patterns, and feelings of self-worth, you may begin to recognize what feels true for you now. Beliefs shaped by social conditioning or past experiences may loosen their hold, allowing you to relate to yourself and others with greater awareness. What you desire, and how you choose to honor it, may look very different from when the retrograde began.
A threshold has been crossed, though the path ahead may still be taking shape. Like a seed beginning to stir beneath the soil, something new is coming to life within you. Give it time to reveal itself.
Venus is still retrograde when she first reappears, so this renewal may initially be felt inwardly. After she stations direct, you may feel more ready to bring what you have discovered into your choices and relationships.
The Station Direct
The station direct is the moment Venus appears to pause and change direction once again, beginning to move forward through the zodiac from our perspective on Earth. Because she spends more time near her station degree, the themes connected with this part of your chart may feel intensified.
In this particular cycle, Venus stations direct on November 13, 2026, at 22° Libra, in Eastern time. If you have planets or important chart points near this degree, or closely aspecting it, this turning point may feel especially personal. There can still be a sense of stillness or uncertainty as the transition unfolds; forward movement takes time to gather momentum.
You may be very clear about what has changed, or you may not be entirely sure of what just happened, but you can feel that something has shifted deep within you. As Venus turns direct, you begin to bring what you have discovered into your everyday life. The seeds planted during the Inferior Conjunction continue to take root, and you may feel more ready to act on what you now know about your values, desires, and relationships.
There is no need to have everything figured out. Allow your choices to reflect your growing awareness, trusting that clarity and confidence can develop as you move forward.
Leaving the Shadow
Venus leaves her shadow when she returns to the degree where she stationed retrograde. At this point, she has completed the retrograde passage and continues forward. This happens on December 15, 2026 (EST), at 8° Scorpio
As time passes, the seeds planted at the Inferior Conjunction rise higher and receive more light each day. Momentum grows over time. What began as an internal realization may start to be reflected in your world as your choices, your relationships, and the way you value yourself.
The Bloom: The Superior Conjunction
With the passage of about nine months, the tiny seed that was planted in the dark has had time to grow. This may be my favorite part of the cycle. The Sun and Venus have another moment of deep union as Venus enters the Heart of the Sun once again. This time Venus is moving direct, and their meeting is known as the Superior Conjunction.
If the inferior conjunction is like a New Moon—a New Venus—then the superior conjunction is like a Full Moon: a Full Venus. The desire, realization, or new sense of worth that first came to you as a soul whisper may now reach a culmination or peak expression. You can look at your life and begin to see what grew from that seed.
At the Superior Conjunction, Venus is always direct.
This is The Bloom.
Like a rose in full bloom, something that began in the darkness has opened into expression. Its beauty has required nourishment, patience, and time.
In your own life, this flowering may reflect the honest conversations, difficult choices, and quiet acts of self-worth that have nurtured the seed planted at the Inferior Conjunction. What began as a soul whisper may now have a fuller expression—a relationship deepened, a desire honored, or a way of living more aligned with your values.
The bloom is the peak expression of what that seed held within it, shaped by everything it has moved through along the way.
Its beauty may surprise you, especially if you could not yet imagine what it would become when the seed was first planted.

Living the Venus Cycle
During the Venus retrograde portion of this cycle, there is a very real opportunity to review and re-assess your values to see how much your reality is in alignment with them. You are invited to look at what is working and what is not working in your relationships, finances, and feelings of self-worth.
There is an excavation of sorts that takes place, an internalization process in which you are invited to go inward for a very honest appraisal of your reality and your desires. There could be a shedding of patterns that no longer serve your highest outcome, and in that process, you may encounter hard truths that require a certain maturity and wisdom to move through them.
For example, you could come to realize that you have difficulty asking for what you really want in a relationship. It seems simple, but it can be very deep. There could also be a unifying effect that brings your voice, your value, and your body into deeper alignment in a way that is brand new for you, and asking for what you wants becomes more natural. However, it is a process.
In all honesty, it will probably be a process of both: a release and a reclamation. Sometimes the potential of this deeply internal process is unknown and emerges over time. Sometimes it is felt immediately. And you can also plant intentions that you consciously nurture as you move forward.
My hope is that you walk away feeling empowered to continue the practice of planting seeds of intention for your life path in correlation with the Venus cycle again and again. Over time, emergence occurs as seeds bloom and your intentions are made manifest. Let’s plant some really amazing seeds together.
